What To Do In Albuquerque, NM
Albuquerque is one of the coolest places I have traveled to in the
US so far and very different from anywhere else I have been. One of the things
I love about Albuquerque is the
awesome food. I love those red and green chili sauces!
There are also a lot of fun things to do in Albuquerque. My number one favorite is the Balloon Fiesta! But even if you can't make it to ABQ during festival season (October), there are plenty of other fun things to do. Here are some of them:
ALBUQUERQUE BIOPARK ZOO
The Albuquerque zoo is rated in the top 20 small
zoos in the US! It's size makes it easy to see everything in one afternoon.
They have some cool animals including a large saltwater crocodile, Tasmanian
devils, wombats, hyenas and African wild dogs! They also have kangaroos and a
tree kangaroo! There have quite a few Asian elephants including a couple males.
The penguin exhibit is fantastic! You can see emperor, king, and macaroni
penguins in a multi-level building that enables you to see the penguins from
all angles.
THE AQUARIUM
At the aquarium, you can see a pair of sea turtles that were
rescued. They also have a dozen sharks including nurse sharks! The aquarium in
Albuquerque is small but you can buy an all access pass that you can use for
the zoo, the aquarium, and the gardens.
CHILDREN'S ENCHANTED GARDEN
This cute, little garden has gigantic features such as a huge
watering can, giant ants and a large, buzzing bee sculpture. There are also
enormous pine cones, acorns, and a pumpkin so big that you can walk through it!
There is a fun maze to walk through and human-size butterfly wings to pose with
too.
There are other things to see in the gardens too, like an extensive model train set and the butterfly pavilion, which was my personal favorite.
OLD TOWN ALBUQUERQUE
We didn't spend much time here but we did see a
lot to do. There are tons of shops and restaurants, plus during Balloon Fiesta
season, there are many live performances in the town square including live
music.
ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA
This is the biggest balloon festival
in the entire world! It is the main event that has made Albuquerque so popular,
especially now that it's promoted by social media.
The Balloon Fiesta is truly a
magical experience! Go early for the Morning Launch and see hundreds of hot air
balloons fill the sky! Or go to the Night Glow and see dozens of balloons
glow in synchronized rhythms. There are many shapes including a cactus, a barn,
a pirate Humpty Dumpty, penguins, I could go on forever!
You can enjoy delicious food all day and a spectacular firework show on some nights. As you meander among the hot air balloons, you can meet with the pilots. Each pilot has a trading card about their balloon and how they got into ballooning. These are collected and traded, especially among kids. Find your favorite balloons and collect the cards for them!
